Scientists are finding alarming amounts of flame retardant chemicals (called polybrominated diphenyl ethers [PBDEs]) in humans and animals around the world, even in the arctic.
Read the excellent how-to article by Seventh Generation for practical tips to reduce the amount of PBDEs in household dust, and for a list of computers that aren’t impregnated with the chemicals.
Meanwhile, though, if you have young children or someone who is immobilized for one reason or another (babies and the elderly, for example), what should you use to keep their clothes from being flammable? Here is a formula that isn’t permanent, but you can
use it as a spray on clothes (let it dry and then clothe the person):
Nonpermanent Flame Retardant
2.5 ounces borax
2 cups boiling hot water
Combine the borax and boiling water in a bowl and stir until all the borax is dissolved. Pour into a spray bottle, shake, and spray onto the clothes. Don’t rinse. Let dry before dressing the person in the clothes. Reapply the spray after each wash.
